It’s a crazy coincidence that my friend Shaun shared a post of a Seafarer 2443 2nd exec on Instagram in the last few days and again said ‘Heuer Seafarer produced for Abercrombie & Fitch in the 1950s. Often referred to as a 2443 ref I am not sure about that as the 2443 had square pushers; it is the 2447 with round pushers as shown in the 1945 catalogue which can be seen on the onthedash website. Perhaps people don’t use the 2447 name as it’s confusing with the later 2447 Carrera.’. We have always talked together about the reference 2443 not being the correct one, as the Heuer 2443 has square pushers and these Seafarer / Mareographes have round pushers and are therefore waterproof. Jeff wrote under this post ‘Looking back over the last 20 years, referring to this Seafarer as a Reference 2443 seems like a mistake that has been repeated hundreds or thousands of times.’

Shauns wonderful 2447 SF 2nd execution

As life would have it, I came across a marvellous find by my friend Nicholas from cenicwatches, which – to the best of my knowledge – is the first illustration of a Mareographe with a reference number!

It almost doesn’t matter that the 2nd execution Solunar can also be referenced, with separate numbers for the steel version and the nickel-plated version!

But let’s tell the story in the right order.

In the early 1950s. Seafarer is the name for the Mareographe in the U.S., distributed from Abercrombie & Fitch.  The Mareographe and Seafarer started in the 1940s/50s Chronograph cases (reference 346 1st/2nd) and the next reference was known as 2443 defined by Jeff at onthedash.

So here is the pic that Shaun showed me: references 2443 and 2444 from the 1945 catalogue.

You can easy see the pusher differences and why the case of an 2443 seems wrong.

What is the confirmation?

And here we go!

Heuer Mareographe 2443 = Heuer Mareographe 2447 SF

It´s now confirmed by a catalogue that Heuer declared and sold that second series as reference 2447 SF.

So we had to rename the former 2443 1st and 2nd exec as 2447 SF 1st and 2nd execution and the former “only 2447 in the “typical” Carrera case reference should be now 2447 SF 3rd.

But look here to find the whole overview of the Heuer Solunar and Heuer Mareographe / Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer executions.

Big thanks to Nicholas!
